Welcome (First Post)

Hey everyone!  How's it going?  That's good to hear.  Oh me?  I'm doing fine as well, thank you for asking.

So I'd like to start this post off by introducing you to "People Are Nice", the official blog of I Like Your Jacket (ILYJ).  I enjoy writing  the compliments for the site as much as I hope you enjoy reading them.

I've created this blog to add a little depth to the compliments of ILYJ, and bring forth many more amazingly genuine and kind aspects of the internet, and most importantly, the human race.  So brace yourself for jaw-dropping, heart-stopping, eye-popping kindness!  I once heard that kindness creates a ripple effect.  Well, if that's the case, then let's drop the largest mother loving rock in this pond of humanity and watch the kindness waves spread!

Sorry, I got a little carried away.  Generosity gets me so pumped up sometimes!  Stay tuned for more benevolence to come.

Hey Momma!

I would just like to wish a happy mother's day to the over 2 billion moms on this planet!  Today is a celebration of one of the toughest jobs imaginable: motherhood.  In honor of these strong and courageous women, here are some fun facts about mother:

  • The oldest woman ever to become a mom was Rosanna Corte, who gave birth to a baby boy at the age of 63!
  • Mother's Day is the busiest day for the phone lines, totaling about 122.5 million phone calls.
  • Between 1725 and 1765, a Russian woman by the name of Feodor Vassilyev gave birth to 69 children and set the record for most births given by a single woman!
  • A solo mom changes about 7,000 diapers by the child's second birthday - averaging close to 10 changes per day!

Will Ferrell once elegantly sang words that truly describe the love we all feel for our mothers: "I love the way you be, you be a big ole’ mommy.  I wanna cover you in super glue and roll you in flowers."

What Would You Do With a Billion Dollars?

Or for that matter, let's make it 60 billion dollars.  After you buy yourself a house and pay off any loans you may have, you'll probably be left with a little over 59.9 billion dollars.  So why not treat yourself a little?  You buy a nice car, a 70 inch screen HD television, a beautiful yacht, and fancy steak dinner.  And that leaves you with... around 59.9 billion dollars.  What more can you ask for?  You may be starting to wonder if it is even humanly possible to spend all that money in a single lifetime.  There is one man out there who I trust taking on this challenge more than anyone, and that man is Bill Gates.

So what has Bill Gates done with his 60 billion dollars?  Over 38 billion of that has gone to charity.  Let me repeat:  Bill Gates has donated over 38 billion dollars in his lifetime.  What's that?  You didn't hear me?  Ok, louder:
Bill Gates has donated over 38 billion dollars in his lifetime!

But Mr. Gates isn't just haphazardly throwing his money out at world problems.  He gets active!  He has managed to get top drug companies to agree on sharing research to help fight tropical diseases, something which is not very easy to do in today's ethically controversial, money first-patients second drug industry.

Looking good, Bill.  Looking real good.
His donation amount is greater than the net worth of the 6th richest person in the world.  He is a humble humanitarian, using more than just his money to help the world.  He is applying his incredible intelligence and influence to generate a real impact.  Keep it up, Bill!

Spoiler Alert!

If you look up towards the top of the page, you'll notice a new tab that says 'Compliment List'.  It leads to exactly what you would expect: a complete list of all the compliments currently on ILYJ!

Of course, it is much less boring to view the compliments without size 1,000 font and an ever-changing rainbow behind the words.  But since most of us are curious like an investigative cat, I figured it would be nice to view them all in one place.  Feel free to try them  out on friends, family, or even complete strangers.

You can always help us get the count up but submitting your ownHave a great day!

Random Acts of Pizza

Their slogan is "Restoring Faith in Humanity, One Slice at a Time."  Random Acts of Pizza is a site (specifically a "subreddit") where people can can help someone who is in the need of a free pizza.

A very happy pizza!
Reddit, a large social news website, is home to many smaller website communities known as "subreddits" - each with its own subject, which includes everything from science and world news to fifth world problems and pickles.  Random Acts of Pizza is one of the 67,000 (and continuously growing) subreddits of Reddit.

Do you have an empty wallet and an empty stomach?  Or do you have a full wallet and a full heart?  In either case, Random Acts of Pizza is for you.  People write posts with pleas for free pizza, and charitable readers can order it for them.  I have read some quite moving stories, including a 4-year old's birthday party that RAOP and a local pizza shop donated 9 pizzas to when informed that the father and mother could not afford to feed any guests.  To me though, the most amazing thing about RAOP is the idea that a site where people spend money to help feed strangers even exists, and continues to exist after nearly a year!  People are nice.

The site is meant to be light and fun.  Sometimes the giver can make a contest out of things (guess a number from 1 to 1000 - winner gets a large pizza!), or sometimes a giver may just want to buy a pizza for a fan of their hometown sports team.  But the main idea is simple: randomly brighten someones day through the beautiful gift of a delicious greasy pizza!
